ASTM B516 - Welded Tube

ASTM B516 specification covers ASTM B516 UNS N06600 Welded Tubes, ASTM B516 UNS N06601 Welded Tubes applicable in various corrosive environments and in low or high temperature services. Welded Tube is circular in shape with different length. These tubes are made in different outer diameter and inner diameter. These tubes have different shape and schedule as per requirement of specification ASTM B516. The Fusion welding process is used for making large diameter pipe. The submerged arc welding (SAW) process or a combination of gas shield tack welding, with downstream submerged arc welding is used to manufacture large diameter pipes. The submerged arc welding process is an electric fusion welding method performed with concealed arc. The best characteristic of the SAW is its high deposition rate, which gives high current strength which is applied combined with favorable heat balance giving accurate dimension to the tube. It is used in high pressure and temperature systems, boiler, heat exchanger, condenser, etc. The ASTM B516 specification covers Welded Tubes of 0.015 inches to 0.500 inches (0.38 mm to 12.70 mm), inclusive in wall thickness, and 1/8 inches to 5 inches (3.18 mm to 127 mm), inclusive in outside diameter. Welded tubes of other dimensions can be manufactured, provided these tubing adhere to all the other requirements of the specification ASTM B516.

Chemical Composition Limits:-

The ASTM B516 specifications requires material to adhere to following test methods performed on alloys, like chemical analysis, tension test, and hydrostatic or nondestructive electric test. The ASTM B516 specifications require material to conform to the following mechanical properties like Tensile strength, elongation, yield strength, and rounding methods.

Elements Composition Limits, %
Inconel 600 Inconel 601
Nickel 72.0 min 58.0 to 63.0
Chromium 14.0 to 17.0 21.0 to 25.0

Mechanical Properties And Other Requirements:-

The ASTM B516 specifications requires material to adhere to following test methods performed on alloys, like chemical analysis, tension test, and hydrostatic or nondestructive electric test. The ASTM B516 specifications require material to conform to the following mechanical properties like Tensile strength, elongation, yield strength, and rounding methods.

Grade Tensile Strength min, psi (MPa) Elongation in 2 inches or 50mm or 4D min, % Yield Strength (0.2% offset), min, psi (MPa)
Inconel 600 80 000 (550) 35 30 000 (205)
Inconel 601 80 000 (550) 30 30 000 (205)

Flare Test: - The Flare test should consist of test specimen (one end of tube among the lot of 100) with the help of expanding tool having covering an angle of 60 degree, until the specified outside diameter of the tube is increased atleast by 30% from the original. During this process, the tube should not exhibit any cracking through walls.

Grain Size: - An n extended (transverse) sample exhibiting complete wall thickness of annealed alloys shall adhere to the average grain size as specified in ASTM B516 specification.

Hardness: -In stress-relived conditions when annealed ends are specified for tubing, the hardness of the ends should not cross the limits as specified in ASTM B516.

Hydrostatic or Nondestructive Electric Test: - Every tube should be put through either hydrostatic test or nondestructive electric test. Within the mentioned specification limits of outside diameter of 1/8 inches (3.2mm) and thickness of 0.015 inches (0.38mm), each tube should be tested to an internal hydrostatic pressure of 1000 psi. (6.9MPa). Fiber stress calculated using this formula should not exceed the specification limits.

Specimen Preparation: -

Tension test- The tubes in the final condition (temper) of production are taken as specimen for tension test, and are tested in the direction of fabrication. Tubes are tested in full tubular size or longitudinal strip with reduced gage lengths. The tension test should be performed on stress-relived tubes prior to annealing the ends.

Hardness test- The hardness test is performed on the inside of the tube near the end or on the specimen cut from the end.

Workman Ship, Finish and Appearance: -

ASTM B516 Welded Tubings are individually covered so that the premium quality of material is retained and there are no damages in the last stages of production. The Tubings should be uniform in quality and temper, commercially straight, smooth and free of any imperfections.

Inspection: - The tubes should be inspected as agreed upon by the purchaser and the manufacturer.

Rejection and Rehearing: - The tube not adhering to the ASTM B516 specification or to authorized modifications should be subjected to rejection. The rejected specimens should be preserved for not less than 3 weeks from test report, and the manufacturer may claim for rehearing within that stipulated time period.

Certification: -

If it is mentioned in purchase order or the contract, then the manufacturer should be able to produce a certificate stating that the material has been manufactured and tested and inspected again with respect to the specification. It should also note the test results of the specimen samples which meets the specification requirements, and should be displayed as and when required.

Product Marking:-

ASTM B516 Welded Tubes are tagged along with the imprints relevant to the job information which also contains information about the delivering destination like heat number, size, material, and part number.
